Dog Safety & Essential Oils

Are essential oils safe for dogs?

Our fur babies are part of our family, so naturally we would want to use what we find so beneficial on them too right? There’s nothing wrong with that either, as long as you know which oils to use and how to properly use them. Not all oils are safe for dog use. You also need to take into account the size of the dog and age, puppies and toy breeds should also have diluted oils when used topically. When using foot applications apply to the pads and between the toes. I personally add them to the shampoo and I have a spray mist I use daily when ever Shadow, my black lab, goes out. I will list the recipe below.

According to the VCA the following essential oils can be toxic to dogs and should not be given to them either internal or topically.

  • Cinnamon
  • Citrus
  • Penny-royal
  • Melaleuca (Tea Tree)
  • Pine
  • Sweet birch
  • Wintergreen – not safe internal human use either
  • Ylang ylang
  • Peppermint

Now I will be honest, I have seen multiple recipes on the internet that use these oils for dogs, and I am guilty of using peppermint on Shadow, before researching further. Nothing happened to him with use, but I would rather not take the risk. Just like people I am sure different dogs are more sensitive to different oils so always start with a small amount and add a drop or two gradually, but remember essential oils are concentrated and less is more. Here are some pet safe oils:

  • Frankincense – anxiety, inflammation, tumors, warts, infections, skin rections
  • Lavender – anxiety, allergies, burns, eye infections, wound care, abcessess
  • Lemon – electrolyte balance, immune boost, lymph function
  • Melissa – chronic cough, immune support, depression
  • Oregano – bronchitis, colds, infections, MRSA, staph, strep, ringworm
  • Rosemary – flea repellent
  • Helichrysum – liver issues, nerve damage
  • Terra-shield – flea repellent, mosquito repellent
  • DigetsZen – diarrhea, ulcers, vomiting, digestive issues, upset stomach
  • Deep Blue – arthritis, muscle cramps

Flea Repellent Recipe

Mist: In a glass spray bottle fill with distilled water and add 10 drops of rosemary and 10 drops of Terra-shield.

Add a few drops of rosemary to what ever shampoo you’re already using for added flea repellent. You actually see the fleas dying, try it.
